JSON Beautifier Online: Format & Minify
What a JSON beautifier does
JSON is easy for software to parse but can be difficult to inspect when it is returned as one long line. A JSON beautifier, also called a JSON formatter or pretty printer, adds indentation and line breaks without changing the values, keys, arrays, or objects in valid JSON.
Use the free JSON Beautifier and Formatter when you need to inspect an API response, review a configuration file, compare nested data, or read JSON copied from a log.
Format JSON online
- Paste valid JSON into the editor.
- Click Format to add consistent two-space indentation.
- Review the nested objects and arrays, then copy or download the result.
The formatter runs in the browser. It does not send the JSON payload to DevToolkit servers.
Formatting versus minifying
Formatted JSON is easier for people to review because each nested level is visible:
{
"user": {
"id": 42,
"roles": ["editor", "reviewer"]
}
}
Minified JSON removes unnecessary whitespace:
{"user":{"id":42,"roles":["editor","reviewer"]}}
Use formatted output for debugging and documentation. Use minified output when a compact representation is useful for a request, fixture, or storage layer. Minifying does not compress the data or make it secure.
Why formatting may fail
A formatter cannot repair invalid JSON. Common causes include:
- A trailing comma after the final property or array item
- Single quotes instead of JSON's required double quotes
- Missing commas between properties
- Unmatched braces or brackets
- Comments,
undefined,NaN, or other JavaScript-only values
If the formatter reports an error, use the JSON Validator to check the syntax and read the parser position. For detailed examples, see How to Fix Invalid JSON.
JSON formatting does not validate your data
Successful formatting proves that the text is syntactically valid JSON. It does not prove that required fields exist, that values have the correct business meaning, or that a payload matches a JSON Schema. Perform those checks separately before sending data to an application.
